Endowments
Endowments allow a living legacy by providing ongoing support over many years. For example, an endowment of $25,000 will approximately provide a $1000 scholarship every year in perpetuity. Endowments form the long term financial base of the Department.
Timothy Ray Sturm Memorial Scholarship Endowment
Please join Tom and Nancy Holley in honoring Tim Sturm, devoted husband of Anne Sturm, Academic Advisor for the Petroleum Engineering Department.
Tim Sturm was a life-long Houstonian who attended Bellaire High School, Texas Tech University and was a great supporter of the UH Petroleum Engineering Department. He had a thirty-five year career in Oil and Gas and was a Partner at Oilfield Pipe of Texas. Tim had a uniquely warm and expansive personality; with a greatness of spirit. Please honor future Petroleum Engineers by donating to this endowed scholarship in his name.

Director’s Endowed Scholarship in Petroleum Engineering
This endowment was established to honor Dr. Trilochan Padhi, formerly of Shell International Exploration and Production, for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of geophysics, as well as for his mentorship of dozens of colleagues over the course of his career. The proceeds of the current gifts and pledges to this endowment will provide for two annual $1000 scholarships to deserving students in perpetuity. Recipients are selected by the Petroleum Engineering scholarship committee. If you prefer to donate to an endowment that will provide a lasting legacy of scholarships, especially if you desire to honor Dr. Padhi, please consider this fund. Your contribution will be used to grow the endowment to offer additional annual $1000 scholarships beyond the current two. An endowment of $25,000 is necessary to yield an annual $1000 scholarship, but gifts of any size are greatly appreciated and will be accumulated to reach the necessary endowment level.
Pathfinder's Endowed Scholarship in Petroleum Engineering
This endowment was established by the 2013 UH Petroleum Engineering graduating class to commemorate the first BS graduating class since the program was re-instituted in 2009. These 13 forward thinking students decided to pay it forward. The proceeds of the current gifts and pledges to this endowment will provide for annual $1000 scholarships to deserving students in perpetuity. Recipients are selected by the Petroleum Engineering scholarship committee. Your contribution will be used to grow the endowment to offer additional annual $1000 scholarships beyond the current one. An endowment of $25,000 is necessary to yield an annual $1000 scholarship, but gifts of any size are greatly appreciated and will be accumulated to reach the necessary endowment level.
Operating Funds
Operating funds are gifts that are used immediately to support the program. They can very much appreciated in any amount.
Petroleum Engineering Chair’s Fund
While all the funds are important, and your generosity is greatly appreciated in any of the funds, donations to this fund endear you to the Chair of Petroleum Engineering because these unrestricted operating funds provide the Chair with the most flexibility to apply the funds to the greatest needs in the program. In the past, such funds have been used to send students to conferences where they were presenting papers, travel for the Chair to conferences and committee meetings, visiting speakers, new student welcome events, office equipment, and instructional software.
Petroleum Engineering Scholarship
As the name implies, this fund provides direct operating funds for student scholarships. Operating funds are dispersed directly to students and not invested or accumulated as in an endowed scholarship. Recipients are selected by the Petroleum Engineering scholarship committee. The scholarships are restricted according to the instructions of the donor, such as GPA qualifications for example, although we encourage minimal restrictions to ensure that appropriate recipients can be found. Gifts of any size are greatly appreciated, but it should be noted that a competitive scholarship of $1000 a year is sufficient to allow waiver of out-of-state tuition requirement which is very high leverage for donations. Scholarship recipients are required to contact donors with their thanks and donors are encouraged to engage with and mentor scholarship recipients if the donors desire.
Petroleum Engineering Undergraduate Lab Fund
Large corporate gifts are used to initially equip the undergraduate teaching laboratories. This fund provides direct operating funds to further enhance and maintain a high quality laboratory experience for students. Operating funds are spent under the direction of the Undergraduate Laboratory Director with the approval of the Chair of Petroleum Engineering, following the restrictions of the donor. We encourage minimal restrictions to ensure the funds can be applied to the most critical needs. Example expenditures include, but are not limited to, additional laboratory equipment, safety equipment, supplies, maintenance, and instructional materials. Gifts of any size are greatly appreciated.
